ACTION! THE CAMERAS ROLL ON AUSTRALIA’S ONLY SMARTPHONE FILM FESTIVAL

The inaugural SmartFone Flick Fest, Australia’s only dedicated smartphone film festival for filmmakers of all ages, has officially launched and is now accepting entries.

SF3 movies must be shot entirely on a smartphone or tablet and the competition is open to filmmakers of any level of experience from Australia and around the world.

The festival provides a platform for filmmakers, from beginners to professionals, to bring their ideas to life and have their films seen by a global audience, without the need for expensive equipment or a big budget.

Co-founders Ali Crew and Angela Blake were inspired after meeting in a short play theatre festival that brings hundreds of writers, directors and actors together each year to experiment with new ideas, develop new skills and explore their creativity. Ali and Angela wanted to create a similar forum for filmmakers.

“Everyone has a great idea for a short film and a potential movie camera in their pocket,” says Ali.

“It’s easy and accessible. That’s reason and incentive enough to just jump in and have a go!”

“All of the tools you need to make a wonderful film are now at your fingertips,” adds Angela.

“The cameras are so good now and the results that can be achieved are amazing. With the help of editing software and various apps, it’s easy for anyone to create a great short film.”

Each film must be no longer than six and a half minutes, including credits, with no further restrictions other than that they must be shot entirely on a smartphone or tablet.

Filmmakers have three months to create and submit their films. Entries close on August 16. The top ten films will then be selected and shown at a Gala Finals Screening at Palace Chauvel Cinema on August 28th and be judged by a panel of film industry experts. The prize for Best Film is $1000 which was raised through the support of generous family and friends who donated to a crowdfunding campaign.

Other awards will include Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor and Actress, with prizes supplied by sponsors Film Ink, Bold Artist Management, Final Draft, Movie Slate, Celtx, Sydney Theatre School and Screen Actors Workshop.

Pocket filmmaker, Jason van Genderen, an expert in the field and Sundance London Film Festival award-winner (for a documentary shot entirely on a smartphone) is the first judge to be announced. Joining him is LA acting coach, filmmaker and actor, Anthony Montes, who recently finished shooting his second feature film and has worked on Playhouse and Holy Land with James Franco.

Submissions can be made online at www.sf3.com.au
